In April 1936, a group of employees who were refused membership in the Texas and New Orleans Credit Union, met in Houston, Texas for the purpose of organizing a credit union that would cover TNO Railroad employees who were denied membership. An application was made to the Farm Credit Administration for a charter to operate a Federal Credit Union. Charter number 1353 was issued to The Southern Pacific General Stores Federal Credit Union, May 1, 1936.
Effective October 1, 2005, SPCO Federal Credit Union merged with Missouri Pacific Houston Federal Credit Union. One advantage that SPCO now offers is membership to all Union Pacific Railroad employees.
PIA of Houston was charted August 21, 1968, and served the Printing Industries of the Gulf Coast. The credit union started out with 48 members and 1 part-time employee. On January 18,1973 the Board of Directors, changed the name to Graphic Arts Credit Union. Due to this change, the credit union hired 2 full-time employees, and started offering better services to members. Another main change, was the field of membership. They could now offer this membership to any person who was in the Printing Industries within Harris County, Texas. In the years to come, Graphic Arts Credit Union, added 2 more full-time employees and changed locations from the Printing History Museum to the current location off of 290 West and 610 North. They also added several services, such as Debit/Credit Cards, On-Line Banking, and Bill Pay.
As of March 1, 2010 SPCO Federal Credit Union and Graphic Arts Credit Union merged. They formed a united alliance to create better services for their members, and offer more lending opportunities.
